Bali Activity Ideas
These are activities we have not tried yet. We read and compared official operator information, local Bali media, Korean reviews, and travel communities separately. We will check prices, operations, safety regulations, and cancellation conditions again just before booking.
In Bali, you can do everything from rafting, surfing, and diving to volcano sunrise trips, waterfall visits, cooking classes, crafts, and performances. If we include all of them, there will be no time left to enjoy the hotels.
So we will schedule only one paid or reservation-based activity per day. Things to do in Ubud and Sanur are covered in separate posts, while this post keeps the activities worth considering even if they require moving between areas. The new candidates are not confirmed recommendations replacing the original eight; they are a list to check again if the itinerary and weather fit.
- Things to do in Ubud
- Things to do in Sanur
- Andaz Bali: What to check in reviews and a day inside the resort
The eight activities we shortlisted
| Activity | Time needed | Exertion | Biggest variable | In our itinerary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Telaga Waja rafting | Half day–full day | High | Upstream rain and water level | Only on a clear day |
| Beginner surfing in Kuta | 2–3 hours | Moderate | Waves and rip currents | When there is a separate southern itinerary |
| Lembongan diving and snorkeling | Full day | High | Currents, waves, and seasickness | A full day departing from Sanur |
| Mount Batur sunrise | Before dawn–noon | Very high | Sleep, weather, and crowds | Only when we have enough energy |
| Banyumala waterfall | Full day | Moderate–high | Rain·slippery stairs | Only one place when going north |
| Cooking class | Half day | Low | How much hands-on cooking there is | Also possible on a rainy day |
| Celuk silversmithing | Half day | Low | Pressure to shop·shipping | Prioritize a class where we make something ourselves |
| Devdan Show | Evening | Low | Performance day·seats | A rainy-day alternative |
Other options to consider if the itinerary and weather allow
Blue Lagoon Padangbai snorkeling
Blue Lagoon Padangbai is a snorkeling candidate on the east coast, different from Lembongan. Recent 2026 guides and tour reviews cite clear water and shallow coral areas as advantages, but the experience can vary greatly depending on the journey to Padangbai, local boat operations, and the waves. We will not add it to the same travel day as Lembongan; we will choose one or the other.
Sidemen rice-field and village trekking
Sidemen Village is an East Bali candidate for walking through rice fields and villages instead of quickly visiting photo spots. Recent travel guides and 2026 tour reviews consider the quiet scenery and village atmosphere advantages, but the travel time is correspondingly long and the trail conditions change when it rains. We will consider it only when making a separate East Bali tour, rather than forcing it onto a Maya Ubud stay day.
Tirta Gangga and Taman Ujung: East Bali culture and gardens route
Tirta Gangga and Taman Ujung are full-day candidates for royal water gardens and East Bali scenery. There are many 2026 tour products combining the two, but the route can easily become long, so we will not add rafting, a waterfall, or the beach on the same day. We will check entrance fees, opening hours, and vehicle waiting time again before setting out.
Sound healing in Ubud
Pyramids of Chi Ubud and Sound Healing Bali are wellness candidates for resting in Ubud in a way different from yoga. The official information introduces sound-healing sessions and events, but we will not describe the effects as medical benefits. Since this overlaps with yoga and spa time at Maya Ubud, we will compare only one session.
Sanur sunrise cycling
Sanur Beach Cycling is less about a separate tour than about pedestrian and bicycle congestion on the beach promenade and the hotel’s rental conditions. A recent Sanur cycling guide introduces a morning route passing the Le Mayeur Museum, but on narrow sections it may not be faster than walking. We will first check whether bicycles can be rented at Andaz, as well as the brakes, lights, and return time.
1. Telaga Waja rafting
Telaga Waja Adventures Rafting · Official information
This is rafting in Karangasem in eastern Bali, different from the Ayung River near Ubud. It takes at least half a day including the long rapids and travel, so we will not add a waterfall or volcano on the same day.
The official operator introduces its equipment, guides, and course, but safety is not guaranteed by the operator’s own description alone. Before booking, we will confirm the following in writing.
- Helmets, life jackets, and a safety briefing
- Insurance and coverage
- Cancellation criteria in rain or when the water level rises
- Shower and changing facilities
- Hotel pickup and actual return time
Local Bali media warn that river flow and the risk of flash floods can rise sharply after heavy rain during the rainy season. Even if the rain has stopped at the departure point, we will postpone if there has been substantial rain upstream.
Recommended: When choosing just one water-based adventure.
Not recommended: A heavy-rain forecast, back or knee pain, or a hotel-change day.
2. Beginner surfing in Kuta
UP2U Surf School Bali · Beginner lessons · Beach safety
For someone learning to surf for the first time, a small-group lesson is better than renting a board alone. UP2U’s official information explains online theory, beach lessons, and the maximum number of students per instructor.
Do not judge rip currents, shorebreak, or wave height from photographs. Even if you swim well, follow the lifeguard’s and instructor’s instructions to get out of the water.
Our hotels are in Ubud and Sanur, so traveling back and forth to Kuta just for surfing would take a long time. We will keep it as a candidate only when it fits naturally with airport travel or a southern itinerary.
Recommended: When you want to learn beginner surfing properly.
Not recommended: Learning alone, entering the water after drinking, or forcing the schedule in strong winds or bad waves.
3. Lembongan diving·snorkeling
Blue Corner Dive Nusa Lembongan · Official information · PADI Penida guide
If we spend a day going from Sanur to an island, we will look at Lembongan’s marine activities before a land-based photo tour of Nusa Penida. Some Korean reviews also compared Lembongan favorably, saying it involved less travel fatigue and congestion than Penida’s land routes.
However, currents, waves, and visibility are variables in the Penida·Lembongan waters. We will prioritize the following conditions over advertisements saying that manta rays can be seen.
- A tour suited to our certification level and swimming ability
- Small groups and the guide-to-guest ratio
- Life jackets, emergency oxygen, and a rescue plan
- Departure cancellation criteria
- Seasickness preparation and insurance
- Operations that do not touch coral, manta rays, or turtles
Blue Corner describes its PADI EcoCentre status and coral restoration activities. This is also the operator’s own description, so we will check the on-site operation and equipment condition again.
Recommended: When we can spend the entire day at sea and prioritize marine-conservation standards.
Not recommended: If seasickness is severe, the sea is rough, or we are trying to fit in a tightly packed island land tour on the same day.
4. Mount Batur sunrise
Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking
This means accepting a departure around 2–3 a.m., dark mountain trails, cold, and the descent. Sleep the night before and recovery time the next day matter more than one photograph.
Local media and travel communities point out congestion, dust, and dark, steep trails along with satisfaction with the views. A jeep tour is less physically demanding than hiking, but it can involve a bumpy ride and waiting, and fog may obscure the views.
- Confirm the local guide arrangements and check for any access restrictions that day.
- Prepare non-slip shoes, warm layers, rain gear, and water.
- Check the cancellation criteria for severe weather
- Leave no litter on the summit or mountain trails
- Do not add rafting or long travel after the descent
Recommended: When you enjoy the hike itself as well as the sunrise and have enough energy.
Not recommended: Too little sleep, knee or ankle pain, a rainy-season fog forecast, or choosing it just to fill the itinerary.
5. Banyumala Twin Waterfalls
Banyumala Twin Waterfalls
We will make it the main destination on a day going to northern Munduk·Wanagiri. Rather than going around several waterfalls as if checking them off, it is better to see one place and add only one nearby meal or viewpoint.
After rain, the stairs and rocks become slippery, and the water flow and level may change. If the water looks different from usual or on-site staff advise against entering, we will not go in.
Considering the round-trip time to the north, we will not put it on a Ubud hotel-change day. If the waterfall is not the purpose, using the riverside and forest at Maya Ubud reduces travel.
Recommended: When taking a full day to see northern nature slowly.
Not recommended: Immediately after heavy rain, flip-flops, or a route that tries to visit several waterfalls too aggressively.
6. Cooking class
Bumbu Bali Cooking School
To avoid duplicating a Ubud cooking class, one option is to add Bumbu Bali to a southern itinerary. However, at the time of research, we could not reliably confirm operating information on the official domain. Before booking, we will first check whether we can contact them directly and whether they are currently running classes.
We will choose an operator according to the following criteria.
- Whether we only watch a demonstration or cook ourselves
- The menu and number of cooking items
- The actual role of the market visit
- English instruction and group size
- Vegetarian and allergy accommodations
- Pickup, cancellation, and refund conditions
Korean reviewers particularly enjoyed the market, the family setting, the explanations of spices, and the meals they cooked themselves, though how well they could follow the English instruction and differences in class prices were also factors.
Recommended: When we want to make something together as a break from water activities.
Not recommended: A product whose operation and itinerary cannot be confirmed, or a class with excessive shopping time.
7. Celuk silversmithing
Prapen Jewelry & Artifacts · Prapen official site
Celuk is known as a village of silversmiths. Prapen introduces several generations of metalworking and its workshops. Viewing a showroom and taking a class where you make something yourself are different, so we will distinguish the reservation details.
If we want a short jewelry-making class, we will also consider options such as SUNSRI Jewelry.
- Actual making time and the steps participants perform
- Silver weight and purity
- Gemstone origin and additional costs
- Whether the finished piece can be received the same day
- Shipping·damage·refund conditions
We will not buy gemstones that involve forced shopping or have unclear information about their origin.
Recommended: When you want to experience the process of making something rather than shop for a finished product.
Not recommended: A product that encourages purchases after only a brief explanation.
8. Devdan Show
Devdan Show · Official schedule
Because it is an indoor performance, it works well as an evening alternative on a rainy day. We will check the performance days, start time, and seats on the official page, and allow separate round-trip travel time to Nusa Dua.
Although it condenses traditional culture into a tourist performance, it raises fewer animal-welfare concerns because it involves neither wildlife contact nor animal acts.
Recommended: When you want to fit a cultural performance into a stay in southern Bali or around an airport transfer.
Not recommended: When we would have to make a long round trip from Ubud or Sanur just for one performance.
What we left out this time
Elephant rides and animal contact
We do not recommend elephant riding or bathing, swimming with dolphins, feeding monkeys, or experiences that treat wild animals as photo props. Even when an operator promotes “rescue” or “conservation,” we will check the contact methods and living conditions separately.
Helicopter tours
Helicopter tours overlap with our current itinerary, while adding cost, carbon emissions, and the work of vetting the operator. This is not an activity to book without verifying the AOC holder, insurance, aircraft type and maintenance, and weather cancellation conditions.
Long-distance motorcycle travel for beginners
The steep slopes and unpaved roads outside Ubud and on Penida are not places to learn to ride a motorcycle for the first time during a trip. We will prioritize official pickup or a car with a driver.
Weather-based alternatives
| Original plan | Conditions for canceling | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Rafting | Heavy rain·rising water level | Cooking class·spa |
| Island·diving | High waves·strong wind·departure cancellation | Sanur walk·yoga |
| Mount Batur | Heavy rain·fog·lack of sleep | Maya Ubud pool·spa |
| Waterfall | Immediately after heavy rain or on slippery paths | Art museum and crafts |
| Surfing | Bad waves·lifeguard control | Indoor performance·massage |
A plan changed because of the weather is not a failure. Not forcing an activity that the operator considers dangerous is the choice that protects the whole trip.
Common checks before booking
- The operator and a contact method for confirming the reservation
- Safety equipment·insurance·rescue plan
- Cancellation and refund for rain·rough seas
- Pickup·return time and additional fees
- Disclosure of personal swimming ability·injuries·allergies
- Travel insurance coverage for rafting·diving·surfing·trekking
- Animal contact·forced shopping
Google My Maps
The activity candidates are organized in a CSV for importing into Google My Maps. Used with the Ubud and Sanur food, accommodation, and activity layers, it can be checked directly in Google Maps during the trip.
