Comparing Three Bali Stay Areas: Central Ubud, Jungle, and Sanur

Dense trees and vines photographed during the trip.

This pre-stay comparison of hotels and public reviews now includes a photo from our September 2026 trip. It has not been turned into a first-hand hotel review. Prices, room availability, breakfast, shuttles, and programs need checking on the official pages when booking and before a visit.

The previous post explained the order of travel and how we planned to spend each day. This one covers why we chose accommodation across these three parts of the trip and what we checked in reviews. That is also why we kept the two posts separate.

When you search for Bali accommodation, jungle pools, pool villas, and newly opened resorts keep appearing. At first, we compared which hotel was more famous.

For our itinerary, what mattered more than hotel rankings was deciding which parts of the trip to spend exploring and which to spend at the property.

So we divided the stay into three sections.

SectionWhat we expected to do at the hotelWhat we planned outside
Central UbudSettle in after arrival and get oriented on footPalace, market, cafés, and restaurants
Ubud jungleEnjoy the property itselfA walk, a swim, or a spa visit
SanurSlow down during the second half of the tripBeach, running, and light meals

Three hotels are not the easier option: we have to move our luggage and coordinate check-in times. But giving each stay a different purpose seemed a way to avoid repeating the same experience.

Look at location first in central Ubud#

In central Ubud, how easily we could go outside mattered more than the view from the room. We planned to check whether we could walk around the palace and market, find somewhere nearby to eat after a late arrival, and reach a café or massage without calling a car. It also helped to be able to organize our luggage easily before moving to the next hotel.

If we choose a beautiful resort on the outskirts and commute to town every day, we pay in both time and car fares. For a central stay, we decided it makes more sense to spend on a location that makes it easy to get around on foot than on the room itself.

Before booking, we planned to look beyond straight-line distance on a map and check for stairs or major roads on the walking route, as well as what the surroundings were like when returning in the evening.

In a jungle stay, time at the property matters more than photos#

For the jungle section, we set the opposite standard: our aim was to spend at least half the day at the property.

The properties we researched fell into roughly four groups.

A pool that looks appealing in photos may be far from the actual room. Our checklist includes whether there are many stairs between the room and pool, whether getting around involves a shuttle or buggy, and whether rain would make it inconvenient.

When comparing jungle stays, these questions helped keep our criteria steady:

  1. How many hours will we spend at the property during our two-night stay?
  2. Which of the pool, walking paths, and spa do we most want to use?
  3. If we go back into town, what is the shuttle service like, and how long is the round trip?
  4. What is the total including breakfast, taxes, and service charges?
  5. Are any parts of the walk from the room to the restaurant or pool difficult?
  6. Can we leave our luggage on a hotel-change day, and can we use the facilities before check-in?

With a beach stay in Sanur afterward, we thought it would be better to focus on valleys, gardens, and jungle walks in Ubud for a different experience.

Sanur is where it should be fine to do nothing#

We did not plan to add more tourist attractions in Sanur during the second half of the trip. We looked for easy access to the beach promenade, a convenient morning run back to the hotel, and a pool and breakfast that could fill a day on their own. Nearby restaurants and cafés should be reachable on foot, and we wanted to avoid a long transfer the day before flying home.

In Sanur, we look less at what more we can do and more at whether a day of doing nothing feels natural.

We did not want to book based only on a claim that a hotel was close to the beach. We planned to check on the map whether the room faced the beach or the road, where the breakfast restaurant and pool were, and whether the location was likely to have music or traffic noise at night.

Do not take room and breakfast wording at face value#

Our comparison covered more than room names: actual area, bed type, extra-bedding options, and whether a bathtub, outdoor shower, or private pool was included. We planned to check how many guests and breakfasts were covered, where hotel credit could be used, the free-cancellation deadline and no-show terms, and the shuttle hours and reservation rules.

“Upgrade available” does not mean that a particular suite is guaranteed. “Breakfast included” also needs to be checked against the number of guests and the entire stay.

Hotel credit only saves us money when it pays for something we would have bought anyway. Adding an unnecessary spa treatment or meal just to use the credit makes the stay more expensive.

How to compare premium booking benefits#

The ranking often flips when we look only at room prices. So we planned to break down the price shown on the booking page like this:

Base room price
+ taxes and service charges
+ breakfast costs for guests not covered, or additional meal costs
+ transport and shuttle costs
- credit we can actually use
= total cost for our comparison

Exchange rates change, and the inclusions on booking sites and official hotel pages may differ. Unless we compare the same room with the same cancellation terms, choosing from the numbers alone can be misleading.

Our current selection rules#

  • In central Ubud, we prioritized location.
  • In the jungle, we prioritized time at the property.
  • In Sanur, we prioritized rest and beach access.
  • We planned not to add a major tour on a hotel-change day.
  • We considered time spent and transfer fatigue, not photos alone.

This remains a planning comparison of hotel candidates and public reviews. It is not a first-hand account of time spent at each property, shuttle or car use, facilities, or room assessments.
